Kalives, Crete

Kalives means 'huts' in Greek, and is so named after the huts that the villagers from the surrounding hills and mountains built and lived in when they came down to the bay to do their fishing. Kalives grew to be a busy fishing and agricultural village. Today, although popular with tourists in the summer, it is still a working village, busy all the year round. I painted this view of the river flowing into the sea for some friends who have been visiting the village for over 20 years and wanted this memorable scene to hang on their wall so that they could see it every day. They are happy for prints to be made so others can share this scene.
